  1. As for question #39…since there isn’t to be a director’s cut DVD does that mean that there aren’t any plans for any DVD release of SLA (with Eng. subs)? The DVD manufacturer Poh Kim Video out of Singapore seems to get the rights to a lot of popular KDramas but it seems they haven’t released it yet either 😦

I always wondered what Seon Jae ment saying ‘until the end’. Did he think at that time, that they wouldn’t have a future? If so, when did it change? When was the moment he realized he wanted her for good? Ah, I need to start a re-watch soon!

One more question… Was SJ jealous of Minwoo as a former student of HW? If not, why did he refuse to exchange phone number with Minwoo when they first met after the audition? Please enlighten me, if it has been discussed in the forum already.

    What fun….

Of note… the headlines the posters puts on these gifs…most of them are what we expect with the exception of two !

Under #9, they called the scene a “butterfly kiss”. SJ gives HW a ‘butterfly kiss’ in Korean. I have never heard of this being referred to as this in any Korean write ups, what does a butterfly kiss mean? What should we think that is? We need to discuss.

Under #16, it says ‘Seon Jae proposes to Hye Won while visiting her (in jail)’. Yes! they called that a proposal…as in a marriage proposal and we all know she had agreed.

This just made me realize a huge cultural difference we completely did not catch that came into play here. Wow.

For us ‘westerners’ we just accepted the dialogue as Seon Jae saying ‘we should try going out more seriously and even shack up together (play a couple) which could or not lead to a marriage. But in Korean culture, when a guy asks a girl to ‘play a couple’ that is asking the woman for a hand in marriage. Yes I understand that man and woman live together unmarried but it is not widely accepted and one would certainly not intentionally set out to do that or ask a woman to do that.

And we know from our Script video that Seon Jae expected that Hye Won ask him to forget about her. So he came prepared – to ask her to marry him !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    What the heck.

So soompi friends… is this a new genuine discovery? Was that a marriage proposal? And she said yes to marriage?

Or should we just write it off as a case of one DCInsider poster naming the scene as such?

If we agree it is a marriage proposal, how is it that all the smart people in this thread never even thought that it was when we were endlessly debating the ending of the drama and what it meant for this love relationship? Geesh.

I don’t remember seeing that in DCInsider either, though I admit I have not read through all of that like I have this Soompi.

Man, I come back from a business trip and discover this gem… SO what say you all?

So, @seungshinl – is “play a couple” a more literal translation of what viki offered as ‘living together’? gooddrama just talks about “giving our relationship a shot.” Too many different translations!!
If the first, it totally makes sense that it would mean marriage in a Korean context
Either way, Wow – it’s great to be confronted with such a fundamental cultural bias – assumptions we didn’t even consider we had.
So I think this question needs to be added to the PD/Author’s list!

Very good @gretac, I am going to set aside ‘butterfly kiss’ for another time but right now, this marriage proposal thing got me spinning.

For the Script subbing, @blindd and I use Viki translation. And I scrupulously follow the rule of not editing or changing even though sometimes I am dying to, just because, because translation is a subjective matter to a limited extent.

But now I am going to translate the ‘marriage proposal’ section as I see it. I have not seen Viki translation of it in a while and it could be the same as that or not.

This is what the Script says of that scene:

        선재 (무슨 말 하려는지 알아요)

Seon Jae (I know what you are gong to say)

        – a sigh (by Hye Won)

Hye Won (It’s ok for you to) forget about me. You somehow came to me, and did all you needed to, (you) loved me, (you) made me lose everything, (I) absolutely could not have done it with my own will…for that I am grateful, you can leave now.

Seon Jae (smiles/smirks) where would I go, leaving the house empty (when the house is empty)?

        Hye Won (Is that So?)

Seon Jae (calmly, with serious look) (I) don’t know (if it will be) one year (or) a life time, (but) we need to live together…one day (we will) fight like crazy, another day (we will) roll around all day long, (but if we) break up without doing that at least once, (it is) so short changed (wasteful).

Hye Won (pretending a pout) if that is so, do try it

Seon Jae (smiles again) you are kinda (a little) pretty too.

So Seon Jae definitely said “we need to live together” and that is more than enough to be thought of a marriage proposal. But the PDnim and Writernim always leave a room for interpretation.

Once again when they could have made it 100% clear and literal, they give us 90% and leave 10% hanging. They could have had Seon Jae say ‘우리결혼해요’ this is literally ‘let us get married’. This (banmal version of it – 우리결혼하자) is what So Ji Seob said to Ha Ji Won in ‘Something Happened in Bali,’ my other favourite drama. Grrrrrrrr…..
